Rancho Chualar II Development Petition--Yellow Sheet

HELP US SAVE FARM GROUND IN CHUALAR
STOP DEVELOPMENT ON AG LAND

On February 17, 1998, three supervisors voted to approve the rezoning and General Plan amendment to allow development on 151 acres of highly productive productive farm ground in Chualar. This 800+ housing unit is called Rancho Chualar.

The people of Monterey County are tired of prime agricultural land being paved over for more development. The people of Monterey County do not want our beautiful valley to become another San Jose or Los Angeles. The people of Monterey County are ready to fight for what they feel is fair.

Our county General Plan was developed to direct controlled growth around our cities. This what the majority of residents supported and our supervisors

adopted. Now, however, we have a private developer that wants to put 3500 people in the middle of highly productive farm ground with the closest incorporated city five miles away! There is no infrastructure to support the development. Well, if this is true, then the developers should be honest and say they are putting a new city in the middle of the valley. A CITY, not a group of homes!

They do their lobbying and come away from a divided Board of Supervisors with an exemption from the rules that everybody else has to follow. This is not planned, controlled growth. This is a private developer deciding where HE wants a project.

The County Subdivision Committee voted unanimously against this project. The County Planning Commission voted unanimously against this project. The County Grand Jury raised concerns about this project. What do three supervisors know that your fellow, appointed citizens serving on these committees do not know?

This particular parcel of land is estimated to produce over $800,000 of vegetables a year, employing many people and spending much money in our local economy to produce these crops. As long as it is not paved, it will continue to do this year after year after year. If covered, it cannot be replaced and will never produce a harvest again. If this project is allowed, where will the following 800 homes be? Anywhere the next developer wants them?

We are committed to fighting this development. It cannot occur on our choice farmland. Developments such as this must occur near the cities, it should not and will not be put where there is no infrastructure to support it. We ask the people of Monterey County to join with us. Whether you want to donate time or money, The Committee to Save Ag Land welcomes your support for this vital referendum. In just a few short days we have received tremendous assistance from people all over Monterey County. Please join us now. Your help is vital as we have but a short 30 days to gather over 15,000 signatures.

Join us to put this issue to the voters of Monterey County. This is the only way YOU can prevent our county from being the next Los Angeles.
