The following Land Use Reports have been presented on KUSP Radio by Gary Patton, Executive Director of LandWatch Monterey County. The opinions expressed by Mr. Patton are not necessarily those of KUSP Radio, nor of any of its sponsors.

Monday, October 21st – Inter-Regional Partnership Group
This afternoon, from 2:00 to 4:00, an important meeting is taking place. The Monterey Bay Area – Silicon Valley Inter-Regional Partnership Group will gather at the Morgan Hill City Hall, at 17555 Peak Avenue, in Morgan Hill. The Inter-Regional Partnership group is comprised of elected officials from Santa Cruz, Monterey, Santa Clara, and San Benito Counties. They are jointly undertaking a study of the jobs-housing balance issue, in a region that includes the Silicon Valley, one of the most economically dynamic places in the world. Over the past decade, the communities of the Silicon Valley have only built one house for each seven new jobs created there. All those new employees have had to find their housing in surrounding areas, which not only include Santa Cruz County and Monterey County, but communities in the Central Valley as well.

Everyone knows that this type of growth, based on long-distance commuting, is bad for local communities, bad for employers, bad for employees, and bad for the environment. Still, no one has done anything about it yet.

When CISCO Systems, then a rapidly expanding company, proposed to build a new office park in the City of San Jose with 20,000 new jobs and not one new house, Santa Cruz County, AMBAG, and the City of Salinas all sued. This Inter-Regional Partnership Group is one of the results of that litigation. Let’s hope the elected officials meeting today can find a way to make that a partnership a partnership in fact, not just in name.

For KUSP, this is Gary Patton.
