LandWatch Receives Grant Award
The Catherine L. and Robert O. McMahan Foundation has made a grant award to LandWatch Monterey County, to assist LandWatch with its work on affordable housing. (11.21.04)
LandWatch and Common Ground Agree
LandWatch Monterey County and Common Ground Monterey County have issued a Joint Statement on Conservation and Development principles. Both organizations believe that, as growth occurs, it is important to phase and locate that growth in a way that conserves both important natural resource lands, and the commercially productive farmlands that are at the basis of the agricultural industry that sustains our local economy. The Joint Statement calls on the Board of Supervisors to set a new direction in land use policy for Monterey County. (posted 02/15/02)
Patton Receives Award As"Environmental Educator"
LandWatch Executive Director Gary Patton has been recognized by the Ventana Chapter of the Sierra Club for his efforts in environmental education. He will receive the Ventana Chapter 2001 Environmental Education Award on November 4th.

Chris Fitz Comes to Work for LandWatch (03/26/01)
Chris Fitz has stepped down as a member of the LandWatch Board of Directors in order to become a paid consultant to LandWatch. Chris will work half time on a variety of tasks involved with building membership, fund raising, and grassroots community building. We are delighted to have Chris carry on his work for LandWatch in this new capacity.

New LandWatch Office in Salinas (3/9/00)
LandWatch opens a new office in Salinas, to improve its ability to influence critical land use decisions.

LandWatch Awarded Packard Grant
The David and Lucile Packard Foundation awarded LandWatch Monterey County a three-year, $225,000 general operating grant. These funds will support LandWatch's efforts to research and monitor local land use plans, organize citizen involvement, and improve the quality of life through long-range, comprehensive land use planning.

 

Issues and Actions

Commission Positions Open in Marina (8/8/01)
The City of Marina is seeking applicants for vacancies on the Marina Planning Commission and the City Services and Improvement Commission. Apply by Friday, September 7, 2001. This is a good opportunity for LandWatch members and supporters to have a significant influence on the future growth and development of Marina.

North County Candidate Forum Set For February 20th
LandWatch does not make endorsements in political races. We do encourage our members and supporters to become informed, and particularly to find out what the candidates think about the land use and planning issues that will have such an impact on our future. An important North Monterey County forum for Sheriffs and Supervisorial Candidates is coming up on Wednesday, February 20th. Click here for the PDF document.

LandWatch Recommends That the Board of Supervisors Adopt a New "Written Correspondence" Procedure (8/10/99)
It is important for the Board to have a system in place to ensure that written correspondence is acknowledged and tracked, so that members of the public know the disposition of their suggestions, comments and the like.
