LandWatch submits a second letter to the Planning Commission on the Final EIR for GPU 2010
The final environmental impact report (FEIR) for GPU 2010 was released in March 2010. After submitting our comments on this document in May, LandWatch uncovered some troubling facts about how the County planned to address erosion and sedimentation issues and the Salinas Valley water supply. We then submitted a second letter to the County addressing these issues on July 20th. (08.01.10)


LandWatch Around the County Transportation Series Re-cap
LandWatch held a series of three programs this Spring about transportation in Monterey County and SB 375. Speakers included folks from TAMC, MST, and AMBAG. LandWatch submits impressive letter on GPU 5 Final EIR
The final environmental impact report (FEIR) on GPU 5 was released in March 2010. LandWatch submitted our comprehensive letter to the Planning Commission on May 25th. There are more Planning Commission hearings on GPU 5 planned, and then GPU 5 goes to the Board of Supervisors. Our main concerns are: erosion and sedimentation, the water supply of the Salinas Valley, the Agriculture Winery Corridor, and traffic. (06.01.10)

LandWatch Questions Millions in Reimbursements on Regional Water Project
LandWatch submitted letters to Marina Coast Water District (MCWD) and the County Board of Supervisors questioning their agreements with Cal-Am Water to receive money for work on the Regional Project. The agreements could violate both CEQA and LAFCO laws. Also under the agreements, Cal-Am’s Peninsula ratepayers could pay for projects that benefit non-rate payers. (03.03.10)


What’s new with the Coastal Water Project?
On December 17, 2009, The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) certified the 3,100 page Final Environmental Impact Report (FEIR) for the Coastal Water Project. Certification (finding the document adequate) was originally scheduled for January 2010, but the action was expedited to December presumably to enable local agencies to use the document for their actions. LandWatch and the Salinas Valley Ag Trust submit letters on Final EIR for the Coastal Water Project
LandWatch Monterey County recently submitted a letter to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) on the final environmental impact report (FEIR) for the Coastal Water Project. LandWatch is very concerned about the potential growth-inducing impacts of the project and the potential impacts on North County’s water supply. (02.05.10)

LandWatch and Agriculture interests stood together to support Williamson Act funding
On Tuesday, October 27th LandWatch, the Cattleman’s Association, the Ventana Wildlife Society, the Farm Bureau, and the Salinas Valley Agriculture Land Trust stood together with Supervisors Lou Calcagno, Jane Parker, and Simon Salinas to urge Governor Schwarzenegger to reinstate funding for Williamson Act contracts. LandWatch supports the Hybrid Regional Water Plan at the CA Public Utilities Commission Hearing
On July 13th LandWatch and a group of environmental groups testified at the California Public Utilities Commission (PUC) hearing that took place right in Monterey’s City Hall. We presented the Hybrid Regional Water Plan as the environmentally superior alternative to the Coastal Water Project. Below is the LandWatch letter submitted to the PUC administrative law judge, Judge Minkin, and Commissioner John Bohn. (07.19.09)


Hybrid Regional Water Plan: The Environmentally Superior Alternative
LandWatch and a group of community stakeholders developed a Hybrid Regional Water Plan, endorsed to date by the League of Women Voters of the Monterey Peninsula, the Prunedale Neighbors Group, the Carmel Valley Association, and the Ventana Chapter of the Sierra Club. (07.10.09)


LandWatch endorses Salinas City Council’s direction to staff to prepare a compromise Big Box Ordinance
LandWatch Monterey County, along with our labor and small business allies, supported the Big Box Ordinance that the Salinas City Council voted 5-2 in favor of on Tuesday, March 10, 2009. After the ordinance was passed, Wal-Mart circulated petitions to referend the ordinance. (06.23.09)

LW comment letter on the Coastal Water Project DEIR.
LandWatch Monterey County recently submitted a comment letter on the Coastal Water Project’s Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR). It is our hope that Monterey County can soon begin to solve our critical water supply problems. (04.24.09)

LandWatch Delivers Impressive Response Letter on the DEIR for GPU5
LandWatch evaluated the DEIR with exhaustive thoroughness and precision and delivered a comprehensive 162 page letter to the county evaluating the DEIR. It included 70 additional pages of expert analysis from biologists, and water and traffic engineers. (03.08.09)
